It’s Like Licking The Wallpaper In Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory

Jack White taken side stage at Bonnaroo

As the summer concert season begins, I find myself in the same, seasonal, predicament. Too much great music to see, not enough time to squeeze it all in. Part of my actual job description as Music Director of WTTS is to engulf myself in as much music as possible, both live and recorded,  so that I can bring a plethora of compelling  music to the WTTS table. The way I figure it, I have a little over 120 days (starting in May and going through early September) to soak it all in. So, I will rely on 2 summer concert festivals and a radio convention to help with my predicament.

The first musical gathering of magnitude is Bonnaroo Music Festival next week in Manchester, TN. I will have the opportunity to bounce from show to show and make the most of my 4 day excursion. From major headliners to artists that have just begun, Bonnaroo is like licking the wallpaper in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The next festival, taking place the first week in August, is Lollapalooza in Chicago. Same senario as Bonnaroo but I usually check out the bands I had to miss at Roo and the acts that didn’t make it to Indianapolis on one their tour. Oh, there are the occasional “they kicked my ass the first few times so I need to see them again” moments. Three days after Lollapalooza, I will head to a radio convention in Boulder, CO. Now comes the chance to witness the live performance of some of those emerging artists that I may have missed, revisit some of the artists I haven’t seen in awhile and discuss my latest musical passions with some of the most respected ears in the biz.

Yes, the summer concert season is a whirlwind and the most busy part of my year, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Have I told you lately how much I love my job?
